Viskózní jedovatá kapalina sladké chuti, bez barvy a zápachu. Vzhledem k vysokému obsahu kyseliny glykolové a kyseliny šťavelové je klasifikovaná jako zdraví škodlivá a musí být zákonně označená symbolem Xn. Ve formě koncentrátu podléhá v množství převyšujícím 1000L předpisům ADR.
Ethylenglykol se vyrábí z ethylenu přes ethylenoxid, který reaguje s vodou za vzniku ethylenglykolu.
